Ebenezer was a small church in a poor community. Some of the church members hardly had enough to provide food for their own families. But in spite of the poverty, the church believed in the Biblical truth that we are blessed to be a blessing. As a result, they decided to take two offerings during every worship service. The first offering was the traditional passing of the plate for coins and bills.
But the second offering was the opportunity to bring a handful of rice, a sweet potato or an ear of corn to share with the neediest members of their own community. Some members gave cash. Some gave a little bit of food. Some gave both. But all the members of the church gave from their hearts in order to share the love of Jesus Christ with their neighbors in a very tangible way. “They gave…beyond their means, of their own accord.” 2 Corinthians 8:3
